A Mavierick Islander

Directed by Margaretta Darcy / 2020 / Documentary / 52 mins

Synopsis

Is he a lovable rogue or is he a man of the people? A portrait of Sean Ó Loingsigh from The South Connemara islands. This film follows in a humorous way Sean Ó Loingsigh’s banter with his fellow protagonists. We see his frustration at how local politicians ignore the islands and it’s potential. It is a beautifully shot documentary, filmed and edited by Finn Arden.

This film follows the rhythm and the fragility of island life. Seán is determined to keep his community alive without losing its language and culture. He wants to rise above the elitism of golf by building a nine-hole course in the middle of his bog! Seán has further plans to entice tourists to keep the islands alive. He is an entrepreneur and community advocate. Golf Mara is one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country.

Director Statement

In life I admire those who go against the grain. I believe the maverick is an essential ingredient for change. My film will show this by exploring the life of Seán Ó Loinsígh, combining social entrepreneurship and community leadership. Studying the rules and breaking them, is sometimes the only way to get things done!
